Keewaydin Island – Marco Island’s Secret Beach
Keewaydin Island has recently made the list as one of CNN’s Top 10 Secret Beaches to Discover. Keewaydin Beach which is more popularly known as Keewaydin Island by the locals, is a 1000 acre barrier island located just off Marco Island and is part of the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The island which is known for its beautiful white sand and aqua marine waters is a longtime favorite hangout among the locals and is accessible only by boat. Largely unspoiled the island has only a few self-contained homes which run with the help of generators, solar panels, and rain collection systems. Keewaydin Island is also home to manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, and many species of birds. It is also a great place to go “shelling”. Only a quick boat ride from Marco, Keewaydin is a unique place to spend the day but still be close enough to hit one of the local restaurants for lunch.
